Three destinations to begin
Separate paperwork into action needed, keep for reference and review before disposal. An uncertain document belongs in the review group. The aim is to find tasks and reduce mixing, rather than decide every retention question in one afternoon.
Give actions a next step
Write a brief next action and any actual due date on a separate note. “Call provider about this bill” is easier to start than “deal with finances”. Keep sensitive documents somewhere appropriate, not in a public view or a shared photograph.
Check before discarding
Records for tax, insurance, ownership and official processes can have different requirements. Check the relevant organisation or qualified adviser before throwing them away. Do not use a generic tidying checklist as a document retention policy.
Choose a short review appointment
Set a realistic date for the review pile. Keep originals where required; a phone photograph is not always a suitable substitute. Shred or otherwise securely dispose of personal information only after deciding the document can go.
Keep going, gently
